Measuring and Monitoring the Carbon Assets of Land

MEASURING WHAT MATTERS

To get this started, they needed reliable, field-level data to better understand existing carbon stocks and the potential for land management practices to contribute to emissions reductions over time. To help close that gap, Leprino Europe partnered with TIMAC AGRO to assess soil health, soil structure and soil carbon across targeted supplier farms.

There have been 138 farms sampled in Great Britian: a total of 1,942 fields and over 38,000 soil cores. TIMAC AGRO analyzes 25% of each participating farm’s land each year, with repeat audits conducted every five years to evaluate changes in soil health, chemistry and carbon stocks. It is collectively one of the largest datasets of its kind in the UK.

Each participating farmer receives a customized report with results and recommended actions, along with a tailored nutrient management planner to record practices and outcomes over time. This practical information helps farmers make more informed decisions about land and nutrient management while creating a clearer picture of carbon assets across the supply chain.

The results show a 10% decrease in farm level emissions, in addition to the emissions avoided through the wider farm carbon mitigation programme due to sequestration, amounting to 109,250 tCO2e in 2025 alone. The data also supports farmers as they prepare for government programs, including requirements under the Sustainable Farming Scheme (SFS): Sustainable Farming Scheme: technical guidance for soil testing | GOV.WALES.

CREATING VALUE THROUGH COLLABORATION

By pairing actionable agronomic insights with supplier collaboration, the TIMAC AGRO and Leprino Europe partnership is helping deliver meaningful value for farmers, supplier partners and Leprino—supporting more resilient farm management while advancing our shared commitment to responsible dairy.
