Colorado Water Responsibility
LEPRINO'S GREELEY FACILITY IS A NET WATER PRODUCER
Leprino Foods was recently featured in Water Education Colorado’s Headwaters Magazine related to our company’s efforts to reduce water intensity. The article focused on our Greeley facility, which has been considered a net water producer since 2017.
As the world’s largest producer of mozzarella cheese and a top producer of lactose, Leprino’s products rely on milk – which is about 87% water. The cheese and dairy ingredient production process results in an abundance of “condensate of whey” water which the company recovers and reuses.
In Greeley, that water is eventually cleaned to stream quality standards and conveyed to the Cache La Poudre River.
“We actually are contributing more water to the river than we take in from our municipal source,” says Erik Nielsen, Leprino Foods’ associate general counsel.
